Chip sealing is a surface treatment that places aggregate over an asphalt binder, then rolls the stone into place. It can renew texture, improve traction, and protect suitable underlying pavement at a different cost point than a conventional asphalt overlay. The finished surface has a more textured appearance than smooth hot-mix asphalt.
